Past, Present, Future

As part of the Social Studies curriculum, we have been learning about the 'past, present, and future' in Kindergarten.  I think that it was an eye opener for many of the students, as to how life was in the past.

Each student wrote an opinion piece in regards to the following question: "If you could go back in time and live in the past, would you?  Why or why not?"  14 students responded that they wouldn't want to live in the past, while 2 replied that they would want to.  Here are a few of the student responses:
  • I would not want to live in the past because you would have to use an outhouse and get water from a pump.
  • I would not like to live in the past because I wouldn't want to be in a classroom with everybody else or use an outhouse when it's cold.
  • I would like to live in the past because I would like to use a chamber pot.  It's right under your bed.

We concluded our unit, by learning about how people change over time.  Each student was able to look at pictures of themselves, showing the past and present.  (Thank you to everyone for bringing pictures in!)  Below you will find pictures of students hard a work, creating their own timeline.  Their timeline illustrates what they looked like in the past, what they currently look like, and what they think they will look like in the future.

Sight Word: 'can'

Last Friday the sight word 'can' was introduced to the students.  As a way to reinforce this new word, the students made sight word watches.  They all enjoyed coloring their own watch, and wearing it during the afternoon.

Time Flies!

My apologies for it taking me so long to update our blog.  Quarter 1 flew by and I cannot believe it is already December!  We have been very busy learners in Kindergarten.  Below you will find some pictures, which help to show what your child has been up to these past few months.  Enjoy!

Halloween Party
We had a lot of fun during our Halloween party.  Students made a fun craft, had tasty treats, and played pin the hat on the cat!

Hard At Work!
It's so nice to see classmates working together!

What's Inside of a Pumpkin?

Last Tuesday we began our first science unit on pumpkins.  We began our unit by creating a KWL chart (what we know, want to know, and what we learned).  The students generated many questions, as to things that they would like to learn about pumpkins.

Here's a list of the students' questions and the investigations that we have been conducting:
  • How tall is our pumpkin? (11 unifix cubes tall)
  • How many creases does our pumpkin have? (20)
  • How much does our pumpkin weigh? (13 pounds)
  • Will our pumpkin sink or float? (float)
  • What is inside of our pumpkin? (orange pulp and seeds)
  • How many seeds does our pumpkin have (670)
Today we investigated what was inside of our class pumpkin.  Below you will find pictures capturing the students sorting the pumpkin's contents.

Monday Fun!

Last Friday (10/12) students celebrated their great behavior with another reward.  The students voted and it was decided that we would all make Gak.  Their Gak didn't turn out the way that we had hoped (the borax had expired, causing much of the Gak to remain a liquid, rather than solidify).  Due to this, the students couldn't take their Gak home.

Mrs. Crispell went home and made Gak for all 15 students over the weekend.  They were so happy on Monday!!  Here are pictures of the students exploring their Gak!
